Anambra: Police bust gunmen’s camp in Ukpor Community

The Rapid Response Squad attached to the Anambra State Police Command has busted a suspected camp of gunmen who have allegedly been terrorising the Upkor Community in Nnewi South Local Government Area since 2022 and arrested a suspect.

This is coming as the state Police Commissioner, Ikioye Orutugu, bagged an award of Excellence in strategic crime fighting by the stakeholders of Nkwelle Ezunaka town in Oyi Local Government Area of Anambra State.

According to a release by the state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochikwu Ikenga, the camp of the gunmen was used as a takeoff point when the Divisional Police Station, Ukpor, was attacked leading to the death of a policewoman.

“Police Operatives attached to the Rapid Response Squad/Anti-Kidnapping unit acting on credible information on 25th April 25, busted a criminal Camp at Ukpor.”

“They arrested one Ewulu Chikwo ‘m’ aged 35yrs, from Osumoghu Isieke Village, Ihiala LGA. The suspect and his gang members were allegedly planning to enforce illegal Sit-At-Home in the area the following Monday.

“During the interrogation of the suspect, he confessed to being a member of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and also among the armed criminals that attacked the Ukpor Divisional Police Headquarters in the year 2022 where a policewoman, Inspector Stella Maris was gruesomely murdered.”
