28-yr old man hacks Anglican cleric father to death in Delta

A 28-year-old man, Ufuoma Umurie, has hacked his father, who is an Anglican Priest to death at Okpare town, Olomu Kingdom in Delta State.

The suspect has been apprehended and handed over to the police at the Otu-Jeremi Divisional Headquarters for immediate prosecution.

The suspect hacked his cleric father, Rev. Isaac Umurie, while asleep, with a machete, bursting his skull and mutilating other parts of his body in the early hours of Wednesday.

The victim, it was learnt had retired from pastoral work a few years back, hence the Diocese transferred him home.

Until his death, he was attached to St. John’s Anglican Church, Okpare-Olomu in Ughelli South Local Government Area of the state.

The killing allegedly took place around 2 a.m , even as the man’s mother narrowly escaped being killed too.

Detectives from the Criminal Investigative Department (CID, Homicide) of the Police Command Headquarters in Asaba are still battling to unravel the circumstances surrounding the killing.

A neighbor, who pleaded anonymity said, “it was the second time that Mr. Ufuoma attempted to kill his father.”

The source said the suspect has exhibited signs of mental instability for years.

He said, “This time, he severed the head of his father with a machete and cut other parts of his body into pieces while he was sleeping.

“Before neighbours and church members could gain access to the apartment, Rev. Umurie, was already butchered,” the source said

The source said it did not end at that, “the suspect chased his mother with the machete while she struggled to save the life of her husband, but she escaped unhurt.”

According to the source, this second attempt on his father was unfortunate because the suspect used to beat him.

He lamented that the last time Okpare-Olomu Vigilante held the suspect, his father pleaded that he should not be taken to the police station.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, SP Bright Edafe, confirmed the murder case, saying, “We have the suspect in custody. He will be prosecuted without delay.”
