Amotekun bursts US dollar counterfeit syndicate in Ondo

Hundreds of counterfeit United States of America dollars were intercepted by the Ondo State Security Network codename Amotekun yesterday.

The currency which was in different denominations was intercepted while three of the suspects were arrested in Akure, the state capital, by the security outfit.

Parading the suspects and 45 others, Commander of the security network, Akogun Adetunji Adeleye, of said the suspects were arrested for various crimes including kidnapping, stealing of cows, attempted murder, and fraud.

Adeleye said the 48 suspects were arrested during the ongoing operation ‘Safe-ground’ in the state. Other suspects, he said were arrested for cultism, illegal migration, stealing of planks, burglary, arson, anti-grazing activities, and vandalisation of critical government assets.

Flanked by senior officers of the command, Adeleye said men of the Amotekun Corps had assured the Muslim faithful that they would put everything in place to ensure that the festive period goes on fine without security breaches.

According to him, a Toyota car and Lexus jeep stolen at different occasions in Owo were traced from Owo to Igbara-Oke where the vehicles were apprehended while some suspects were arrested.

In the last week, Adeleye said the security network responded to the distress call from Owo where a car was stolen, and within 30 minutes, Amotekun was able to recover the vehicle and is on the trail of the robbers.

He said: “Within this period, we broke a syndicate that specialises in vandalising transformers. You can see, across there are some of the coils retrieved from the transformers where they dissected and brought out the coils. The other suspects in this case have left the state, we are on their trail.

“There is this syndicate that specialises in what is called ‘One-Chance’ in local parlance.  Unsuspecting commuters will board their vehicles, they will get midway, rob them, dispose of their valuables, and make away with it.

“We were able to put some of our men in one of the vehicles and as we talk today, out of the ten vehicles they use, we were able to retrieve three and the kingpin of the criminal activity has been arrested and is here on parade.”

On the counterfeit US dollars recovered, Adeleye said the suspects had an herbalist who deceived them by telling customers that they could produce dollars for them, but you could see that they were counterfeit dollars.

He said: “They collected naira from them in exchange for counterfeit dollars. So, we were able to break their cartel and you can see the pots and charms they use in hypnotising their customers.

All they need to tell the victims is to go home and bring all their valuables for these counterfeit dollars.”

Adeleye said 600 suspects have been prosecuted between January and June 2024 and that the state would not be a haven for crime and criminal activities.

He said: “We are telling the criminals in the state to get out of Ondo State. And to the good people of Ondo State, we want to reassure you that the government of Lucky Aiyedatiwa is resolute in making the state conducive for businesses, social activities, and all that makes the state a good one to stay.

“Kidnapping in Ondo State has gone down by 90 per cent and the remaining 10 percent, we only have them in the borders, the extreme. But in all of these few occasions, we ensure that we rescue the victims and the suspects are made to face the music.”
