Police arrest suspected robber in Delta, neutralise one, recover arms

Detective attached to the Delta State Police Command have arrested a suspected robber and killed one of them at Ekpan Community area of the State.

It was learnt that the suspects specialise in using tricycle to rob innocent residents of the state and disposed them of their money, phones and other valuables.

Confirming the story, the Police Public Relation Officer (PPRO), SP Edafe Bright, in a statement yesterday said on May 31, personnel of Ekpan division surveillance patrol team along Army Barracks road intercepted a tricycle with three occupants in an attempt to rob travelers.

Bright said immediately the suspects noticed that Policemen were behind them they took to their heels and the police officers gave them hot chase and eventually one of the suspects was arrested.

He said: “when his bag was searched one cut to size double barrel gun with two live cartridges were recovered from him.

“During interrogation, the suspect claimed that two other suspects who escaped were his gang members and they usually rob their victims and sometimes kidnap them and threaten the victim’s family members to pay ransom.”

He added that the suspect tried to jump across a bridge when he was been taken to his hideout in other to escape and he was immediately maimed by the policemen and taken to the Ekpan General Hospital for medication, but was later confirmed dead by the doctor on duty.

Also, on June 2, the Divisional Police Officer, DPO Okpanam, received a distress call that some young men numbering about seven came with two motorcycles and allegedly robbed a victim (name withheld).

The DPO immediately led officers to the scene where the suspects on sighting the DPO and his team took to their heels. Six of the suspects escaped while one of them identified as Emeka Okafor was arrested and the motorcycle recovered.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, Abaniwonda Olufemi, commended the DPO Okpanam for his swift response and dedication to duty and urged officers and men of the Command to do the same for their Areas of responsibility to be peaceful and urged residents to be security conscious and monitor their environments regularly.
