10 rescued alive as 2-storey building collapses in Lagos Island

Ten people have been rescued from the rubbles of a two-story building that collapsed in the Isale Eko area of Lagos State on Thursday.

The building, which was reportedly defective, collapsed following a fire in part of Dosunmu Market on Lagos Island.

According to the Permanent Secretary of the State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, while giving an update on the incident, “all ten people rescued, including nine adults and a 17-year-old girl, received pre-hospital care from the agency’s paramedics and are now receiving further treatment at Iga Iduganran Primary Health Care Centre.”

He noted that the remains of the building will be leveled to ground zero, while the adjacent building will undergo integrity and material testing to ensure safety.

The Lagos Territorial Coordinator of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Ibrahim Farinloye, confirmed the incident and noted that 14 other buildings in the area were seriously affected and require attention.

According to reports, the fresh occurrence follows that of April when four buildings collapsed due to the intensity of fire that engulfed part of Dosunmu Market on Lagos Island.

Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotosho, had earlier confirmed the rescue of eight people by the LASEMA team.

LASEMA has mobilised rescue team from its headquarters and Command and Control Centre to handle the search and rescue operation.

While LASEMA’s Permanent Secretary, Femi Oke-Osanyintolu, is currently supervising and coordinating the search and rescue operations at the incident scene.
