Delta: Police neutralise kidnap kingpin, arrest 9 others, gun runner, recover guns, ammunition


Detectives attached to the Delta State Police Command have arrested nine suspected kidnappers and recovered firearms.

The Police Public Relation Officer (PPRO), SP Edafe Bright in a statement yesterday said the team again stormed Inene Community in Ughellli North Local Government Area of the state, on the trail of the leader of a dreaded kidnapping syndicate known as Joel Joseph.

It was learnt that the kidnapper upon sighting the operatives opened fire on the operatives, and in the ensuing gun duel, the suspect sustained serious gunshot injuries and was taken to the General Hospital Ughelli where he died while receiving treatment at the hospital.

He said also recovered from the suspect includes; one AK47 rifle loaded with ten rounds of live ammunition, while efforts are being intensified to arrest other gang members.

In a related development, a suspected gun runner, Friday Emmanuel, 43, was arrested by officers of the Command on head bridge, Asaba, during a stop and search duty.

The Police Spokesperson said the suspect was intercepted in a white Toyota Bus marked AYB573 XC, the suspect hail from Morsogar, Ethiope-West LGA, area of the state. While, the vehicle was subjected to search, eight hundred and seventy-five rounds of live cartridges concealed in a sack wrapped with pieces of clothes were recovered.

Bright said the suspect was immediately arrested for further investigation, and the exhibit was impounded, while investigation is ongoing on the matter.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police,  CP Abaniwonda Olufemi, reiterates that through these proactive measures that are being implemented, the Command would curb crime and further broaden the outreach of the police in creating a safe and secure environment for the communities.
