Sacked LWC Staff march to Lagos Assembly, protest dismissal, demand reinstatement
Hundreds of sacked members of staff of the Lagos State Water Corporation and their supporters yesterday marched to the Lagos State House of Assembly, protesting the alleged dismissal of 391 employees.
The protest match which took off from Ikeja ‘Under Bridge’ at about 8am, saw participants match through the Obafemi Awolowo Way in Ikeja through the Lagos State Secretariat and terminated at the Lagos State House of Assembly where representatives of the Speaker formally received their letter of demand from the protesting sacked workers.
The General Secretary, Amalgamated Union of Public Corporations Civil Service Technical and Recreational Services Employees (AUPCTRE), Comrade Sikiru Waheed, who led the protest presented the letter of demand from the sacked employees for onward delivery to the Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, while also demanding the reinstatement of all the sacked workers of the Lagos State Water Corporation.
Similarly, Comrade Waheed called for the provision of adequate funding for the state Water Corporation to carry out its duty of providing Lagosians with safe and adequate water, adding that funds must be subject to proper oversight and scrutiny.
In addition, he called for the probe of the entire financial activities of the corporation from 1999 till date.
Key officials of the Lagos State House of Assembly led by Chairman, Public Account Committee, Hon. Kehinde Joseph, received the protesters at the House of Assembly.
They commended the protesters for their peaceful protest, adding, “God will bless you all for having this peaceful demonstration. I can guarantee you that you will have justice here at the Lagos State House of Assembly. I will present this (petition) to the leadership of the House of Assembly, Hon. Mudashiru Obasa.”
When the protesters pressured to know when the House will look into their petition, Hon. Joseph said, “You will get justice as quickly as possible.”
He, however urged the protesters to exercise patience, saying, “It is a process. I am assuring you, probably before the end of this week you are going to be called.”
