Kumeifo Oba Olaribigbe family stages peaceful protest to Lagos Assembly

The family of Kumeifo Oba Olaribigbe of Isale Eko, Lagos Island, staged a peaceful protest on Tuesday at the premises of Lagos State House of Assembly to express their displeasure over the way their complaints were treated by the office of the Attorney General in a suit between the family and Nolla Sikiru.

Nolla was alleged to have orchestrated the demolition of the Kumeifo Oba Olaribigbe family house, situated at 20, Church Street, Isale Eko, in Lagos Island in lieu of developing the property without the authorisation and consensus agreement of the family members.

The family led by an octogenarian, Alhaja Muinat Disu, seized the opportunity of the protest to submit a petition to the House on the matter urging the lawmakers, who she described as the beacon of hope for the deprived family, to investigate a letter purportedly written by the Lagos state Attorney General directing the discontinuation of the case of illegal demolition of their family property and to allow rule of law to prevail.

“We are here to register our displeasure over perceived interference of Lagos State Attorney General who we are reliably informed has initiated a move to discontinue our case filed against Nolla Sikiru before the Lagos State magistrate court over an allegation of illegal demolition of our family property,” she said.

“We are appealing to the House of Assembly to stop him (the Attorney General) from striking out the case in court as such action would trigger unrest in Isale Eko community.

“The court proceedings are in two phases with the civil side in the High court before Justice Ogunjobi, while the criminal side against Nolla Sikiru is the one that the attorney-general wants to strike out.”

Addressing the protesters, the House Deputy Majority Leader, Hon. Adedamola Kasunmu, commended the family for opting for the path of civility through peaceful protest, noting that nobody is above the law in the state.
